Winter Khushki in Pakistan: Scalp Care for Dry Months

Short answer: in Pakistani winters (roughly November to February), cold, dry air outside, gas heaters inside, hot showers and fewer washes combine to dry out the scalp and let dandruff build up. The fix is lukewarm water, a mild shampoo on most days, an anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week if you have greasy flakes, conditioner, and not leaving heavy oil on for days.
Why khushki gets worse in winter
Dry air
In Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta, winter air holds little moisture. In northern areas it's colder and drier still. Skin, including the scalp, loses water faster.
Gas heaters and room heaters
They make rooms warmer but drier. Sitting close to them for hours dries skin and hair.
Garam paani
Very hot showers feel wonderful in January but strip natural oils from the scalp, leaving it tight and flaky.
Fewer washes
Many people wash less in winter. If you're dandruff-prone, oil and yeast build up between washes, and greasy flakes return.
Woollen caps and shawls
These trap sweat and rub the scalp, and wool itself can irritate sensitive skin.
Heavy winter oiling
Oiling the head and leaving it on for days is a common winter habit. On a dandruff-prone scalp, it can feed the yeast.
Is it dryness, dandruff, or both?
In winter, many people have both: a scalp that feels tight from hot water and dry air, plus greasy flakes from infrequent washing. Our dry scalp vs dandruff guide explains how to tell. In short:
- Small, white, powdery flakes and tightness mean dryness.
- Larger, yellowish, sticky flakes and itch mean dandruff.
A winter scalp routine
Wash days (two to four a week, depending on your scalp)
- Use lukewarm water, and finish with a cooler rinse if you can bear it.
- Use a mild shampoo on most wash days.
- If you have dandruff, use an anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week, left on for three to five minutes.
- Use conditioner on the lengths. If your scalp is very dry, a light touch on the scalp too.
- Pat dry and let hair dry fully before putting on a woollen cap.
Oiling, done right
- Apply light oil (coconut, almond, jojoba) 30 to 60 minutes before washing, then wash it out.
- Don't leave heavy oil on for days, especially if you get greasy flakes.
- If oil seems to make your flakes worse, stop using it on the scalp and use it on the lengths only.
Indoors
- Don't sit right next to gas heaters for long periods.
- A bowl of water near a room heater, or a humidifier, can add a little moisture to the air.
- Drink enough fluids. Winter chai doesn't count as much as water.
Caps, shawls and bedding
- Wash woollen caps regularly, or wear a thin cotton layer underneath.
- Change pillowcases weekly.
- Let wet hair dry before covering it.
Winter diet and skin
No food cures dandruff, but a balanced diet supports overall skin health. Winter in Pakistan is a good season for:
- Citrus (kinnow, oranges) for vitamin C
- Nuts and seeds (walnuts, almonds, chilgoza) for healthy fats
- Fish, eggs and daal for protein
Vitamin D is often low in winter because of less sun. If you also have tiredness or hair fall, ask your doctor about testing.
Mistakes to avoid in winter
- Scalding showers
- Daily strong anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoos on a dry scalp
- Leaving heavy oil on for days
- Putting a woollen cap on wet hair
- Scratching with combs or nails
- Lemon or vinegar on an already irritated scalp
Winter hair fall
Some people notice more hair fall in winter. Breakage from dryness and scratching plays a part. True seasonal shedding is usually more noticeable in late summer and autumn. If your hair fall is heavy or lasts more than a couple of months, look for other causes such as iron, thyroid problems or recent illness.
Children and older adults
- Children with flaky patches and broken hairs may have a fungal infection (tinea capitis), which needs a doctor.
- Older adults often have drier skin generally. Gentle washing and moisturising matter more.
See a doctor if…
- Your scalp is cracked, bleeding, very red or oozing
- Flakes are thick and silvery, or spread to your ears, face or body
- Itching keeps you awake
- A child has scaly patches with hair loss
- Your routine hasn't helped after four weeks
Bottom line
Winter khushki in Pakistan comes from dry air, hot water and changed habits. Turn the water down, keep washing regularly with a mild shampoo, use anti-dandruff shampoo if you need it, oil lightly and briefly, and keep caps clean. Your scalp should feel calmer within a few weeks.
